Don’t Give Up

One of the most important lessons I have learned in sports and in ministry is that those who succeed usually are the ones who don’t give up. Often times life gets hard and the easy thing to do is to give up, to throw in the towel- especially in the culture we’ve created with no fault divorce and products that promise the perfect body without any hard work.
Too often we settle for the easy and the comfortable instead of striving to do the stuff that is really worth the effort. Too often we want our Christianity to be easy, entertaining, and filled with benefits but Jesus said that following him was like taking up a cross and dying. Too often we want our church to be glamorous, filled with programs that make us feel good or that keep our children and youth busy but the first followers of Jesus were more interested in carrying out his redemptive mission to the world around them- pouring their money into ministry to the poor, spending their time in serving widows and orphans, living their faith out in radical displays of faithfulness.
God has called us to be a part of something bigger, something more significant. Christianity is not supposed to be what we’ve made it. It is supposed to be hard. It is supposed to require lots of faith, lots of love and lots of serving. You might be tempted to give up and to settle for something less. But if you do, you will miss out on the very reason Jesus came. Don’t give up and settle for a shallow expression of Christianity. Push through! Don’t give up! Live for something more! Where Will It Take Us?

The church in North America is in flux. I don’t believe “the church” as we know it-even the “cutting edge” churches- is going to survive the next generation. In a way, that is very scary to me. In other ways, it is extremely exciting. Continue Reading
Savor

Last night Marcia Cross died. Marcia was a wife, a mom, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. Her life was full of people who loved her and who she loved in return. For the last year or so Marcia has been battling cancer. She lost the battle but won a greater victory in her death. She no longer has to suffer from the pain of the brutal disease. She is free from the pain of this world. And, she leaves behind many great memories for her family to savor as they deal with their grief. Continue Reading
